THE AMPHETAMEANIES are a vast circus of a band, who have been juggling, oompah-ing, trick-bicycling and occasionally swinging from great heights since 1997.
Originally erected as a marquee of convenience under which friends from different sides of Glasgow’s musical tracks could meet to indulge their shameful shared passion for 2Tone era spikey ska pop, the ‘Meanies somehow never got moved along by …the musical police and, to the horror of the neighbours, became something of a permanent structure.
Under this chequered canvas reside some serious musical souls permanently kidnapped from Glasgow’s indie underground … but over in the caged area, there’s a fistful of big growly skinheads and a cackle of punkettes, none of whom own Pastels albums, at least that they’ll admit to.
The ‘Meanies are a home to child prodigies, tattooed ladies, and family arguments. They range in height from hobbit to hulk, and in appetite from gerbil to hyena. They’ve lost more weekends than you’ve remembered, and will show you the scars if you ask nicely.
Souvenirs of their riotous carnival are available — 2000’s unnaturally fast-paced debut album ‘Right Line in Nylons’, which attracted four Ks in Kerrang alongside a similarly rated Motorhead review, and thus needs no further recommendation, and 2006’s ‘Now! That’s What I Call…..The Amphetameanies’, which prompted one tired and emotional journalist to describe the band as „a sorely under-rated national treasure“.
Album number three is now two-thirds recorded (at Belle and Sebastian’s Argyll Studio in Glasgow). Give us a gig and help us pay for that vital final third…
